If you’re hosting a party and serving your guests food then it’s important to ensure that your tables are set correctly to avoid potential embarrassment!
If you’re not used to eating with a whole array of different courses, cutlery and crockery then it can be a little confusing trying to remember what goes where.
In this blog you’ll find guidelines and simple rules to follow to help you master table setting etiquette in time for the big event.
The golden rules
- Work from the outside in
The most important thing to remember to help you to set your table correctly is that you should always start from the outside and work your way in. This means that the cutlery placed on the outside is for your first course and then you’ll work your way inwards with each course.
- Knives and forks
Forks should always be placed on the left of the plates whilst knives should go on the right.
- Soup spoons
The position of the soup spoon depends on which course soup is being served as. If it is to be eaten as a first course then it should be placed on the extreme right, however if it is being served as a second course it should be placed second utensil in from the extreme right.
- Dessert cutlery
Dessert cutlery can be found above the plate. If a fork is being used then it should be faced to the right with a spoon above it and faced to the left.
